This is a great opportunity to get together with other knitters and see what everyone else is working on. Come in and curl up on our sofas, there’s always hot coffee on!!

Learn the absolute basics of knitting. You will learn to cast on and off, the knit stitch, and simple increases and decreases. Our project is a dishcloth.

Learn how to knit 2 socks at once from the toe up, using circular needles, and find the cure for the second sock syndrome! These socks are constructed with a special toe up cast-on and a shortrow heel. Experience with circular needles and knitting socks is highly recommended. (There is a 2 week break between weeks one and two in order to give you the time for the homework.)

Do you dread sewing up your projects? This class is aimed to cure that!! You will learn to sew up your knitting professionally using mattress stitch. You will also learn different techniques for shoulder seams (three needle bind off and grafting) and how to sew in sleeves.

Bunny Beanie-Beginner
Saturday, October 23 & 30, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
If you've made a scarf and are ready for something more exciting, try this rewarding and fun little bunny hat. In this class you will learn to knit in the round on circular needles and double points, simple decreases, the purl stitch, and some basic seaming. Previous experience with casting on, and the knit stitch is recommended.

Easy Lace Shawl-Advanced Beginner
Tuesday, October 19 & 26, 6-8p.m.
This is a great introduction to lace knitting. You will knit a delicate shawl with a touch of lace. Must know how to knit and purl.

Honeycomb (or Newfie) Mitts-Intermediate
Tuesday, October 12, 6-9 p.m.
Learn the technique of slip stitch knitting and knit these warm and cozy two color mittens. Must have some experience knitting on double pointed needles.

How to Alter a Pattern to Fit Your Body-Advanced
Saturday, September 25, 12-3 p.m. or
Saturday, November 6, 12-3 p.m.
Are your sleeves too long or short? Is the waist of your sweater sitting on your hips or maybe tucked up around your ribs? Are the shoulders too narrow or are they creeping down your arms? Do you need a little more or a bit less room up front? All of these things can be changed in the pattern so that when you finish your garment it will fit you the way you want it to. This course will be helpful whether or not you have a specific pattern in mind. You will need to bring needles and a ball of yarn (for the pattern you want to alter, if applicable, and the pattern), a basic calculator. Must have already knit a garment of the general type you want to alter.

Designing Your Own Sweater Pattern-Advanced
Saturday, October 16, 23 & 30, 12-3 p.m.
Do you know what you want to knit, but can’t find exactly the right pattern? Learn to design your own sweater that will suit your body type and fit you perfectly.
In the first class we will discuss body types and explore which garment styles are best suited to each type. We will then discuss the garment that you want to knit, and select the various stitch elements (lace, cables, ribbing, etc.) for it. If you don’t already have your materials, you will be given any assistance you need to make your selection. Your assignment before the second class will be to knit swatches of the pattern stitches you have chosen for your garment. In the second class, we will use your swatches to prepare your pattern. Your assignment before the third class will be to begin your garment.
In the third class, we will assess your progress, address any problems you may be having and make any changes you want to your design.
Materials: For the first class, if you have the yarn and/or needles you want to use for your garment, bring them along. Also, please bring any books or photos showing features you would like to incorporate. If you have a garment you would like to replicate, or one that fits you in the way you would like design to fit you, please bring that too. For the second and third classes, bring your work in progress, a tape measure and a calculator.
Fee: $75

***All materials are available at the shop. Most classes require some homework, please be sure you will have the time in your schedule to get the at home work finished. Please do not register for a class if you do not have the minimum experience required. All classes require registration and full payment in advance. We had so much fun on WWKIP day that we’ve decided to do it again!
Many of you ran the relay the night before and were clearly too pooped, and others were away that weekend. World Wide Knit in Public Day -- June 12, 2010

Join us June 12th for our third annual celebration of World Wide Knit In Public Day!

A bit about the history of WWKiP Day:

World Wide Knit in Public Day was started in 2005 by Danielle Landes. It began as a way for knitters to come together and enjoy each other’s company. Knitting is such a solitary act that it’s easy to knit alone somewhere and sink into your work without thinking about all the other knitters out there. Neighbors could spend all their lives never knowing that the other knits. This a specific day to get out of your house and go to a local event (with your knitting in tow) just for you and people like you. Who
knows you might even bump into your neighbor! Consider this a spark, to ignite a fire; getting all of the closeted knitters out into fresh air.

WWKiP Day is unique, in that it's the largest knitter run event in the world. Each local event is put together by a volunteer or a group of volunteers. They each organize an event because they want to, not because they have to. They bring their own fresh ideas into planning where the event should be held, and what people would like to do. If it weren't for these volunteer hosts, WWKiP Day would still just be an idea.

In the past some people have used this event as a means to show the general public that ‘not only grannies knit!’ and while that’s great and all, we should keep in mind that without those ‘grannies’ we wouldn’t have the wealth of knitting knowledge that we do.

WWKiP Day is really about showing the general public that knitting can be a community activity in a very distinct way. In some places there are many different knitting groups that never interact with each other, on WWKiP Day they come together in one place, making them hard to miss. World Wide Knit in Public Day utilizes the internet, where volunteer hosts are able to sign up, and knitters are able to find local events with ease. There are various online forums where hosts and knitters meet to talk about the plans for their individual events.

London-Wul Bus Trip Was a Blast!

What fun, what fun!
The day started with knitters armed with cash, credit cards and caffeine boarding the bus outside Tim Hortins on the Fredericton Exhibition grounds. Within seconds, needles were out and the knitting commenced.

Techniques, tips, works in progress, finished objects, knitting stories and laughter were plentiful, making time fly as our wonderful bus driver (who, by the way, said he was very relieved his bus was not full of happy "hookers." GROOOAN!) pushed pedal to the metal and got us safe and sound at London-Wul.

Were we happy to be finally there? Ewe know it!

London-Wul is amazing. Walking in felt a little like walking into a dream. Sheep and rabbits greeted us, like this charming fellow, as we entered the store.
Colors, textures, nifty tools and hidden treasures waited to be discovered everywhere you looked.
This is one of the many stunning fiber art pieces by owner Heidi Wulfraat.

Trish, arriving fashionably late by an hour, endured jokes about her navigation skills, missing signs and not being able to follow the back end of a bus. Our dear bus driver suggested she might want to leave now so she would be back in Fredericton by the scheduled return hour, some 4 hours away. Poor Trish. Good thing she likes scenic tours!

The staff at London-Wul were so friendly. A wonderful lady named Wilhelmina gave an impromptu demonstration of drop spinning. Absolutely fascinating! Needless to say, she inspired many of us to give it a try.
We were able to sit and knit with the people from Moncton and surrounding area who come to London-Wul for their usual knit-ins. For added fun, Heidi drew names and the winners were able to choose a prize from a very generous basket she had made up for the occasion. We voted on the pattern to do for a summer knit-a-long, which is "Summit."

Trish certainly knows how to do a yarn bus trip. And special thanks to Heidi Wulfraat of London-Wul for having us!

If you took a rectangular piece of knitting and sewed the ends together, you would most likely end up with a belt. It would be a loop with an inside surface and an outside surface. But what if you took that same strip of knitting and gave it a half twist before sewing the ends together? The result would be a fascinating geometric oddity called a mobius strip. In this class we will knit a pretty, lace cowl with a twist on circular needles AND, with no sewing up! Learn the ins and outs of moebius knitting in the fun and functional project.
Must know how to knit and purl.

Lace Prayer Shawl-Advanced Beginner
Tuesday February 2 & 9, 6-8 p.m.
The making of a prayer shawl is a spiritual practice which embodies our thoughts and prayers for the receiver. Whether you know someone who would be a worthy recipient, or you would like to learn basic lace knitting, this is the project for you. Must know how to knit and purl.
Materials: 5.5mm needles and 375yds worsted weight yarn

Felted Slippers-Advanced Beginner
Tuesday February 16 & March 2, 6-8 p.m.
Get in on the felting frenzy! Knit a fun and funky pair of slippers and learn how to felt them. Must know how to knit and purl.
Materials: 6mm double pointed needles and 100g Noro Kureyon or other worsted weight yarn
Fee: $35 plus materials

Entrelac Socks-Advanced
Monday February 22, March 8 & March 22, 6-9 p.m.
Knit a pair of socks in self striping yarn with an entrelac cuff (looks braided). Must have already knit socks on double pointed needles. There are 2 weeks between each class in order to give you time for the required homework.

Lace Cowl-Intermediate
Monday January 18 & 25, 6-8 p.m.
Knit a lacy throat-warming cowl--very pretty and feminine. Must have some lace experience.
Materials: 24 inch 4.5mm circular needle and 160meters of fingering weight yarn

Beginner Crochet
Thursday February 4 & 11, 6-8 p.m.
Learn the basics of crochet as you make a simple dishcloth. Learn how to hold the hook and yarn correctly and basic stitches.
Materials: 4.5mm hook and one ball of dishcloth cotton in a solid color.
Fee: $40 plus materials

Honeycomb (or Newfie) Mitts-Intermediate
Tuesday February 23, 6-9 p.m.
Learn the technique of slip stitch knitting and knit these warm and cozy two color mittens. Must have some experience knitting on double pointed needles.
Materials: 4mm double pointed needles and two colors of worsted weight yarn
Fee: $30 plus materials

How to Alter a Pattern to Fit Your Body-Advanced
Saturday January 23 or Saturday March 13, 12-3 p.m.
Are your sleeves too long or short? Is the waist of your sweater sitting on your hips or maybe tucked up around your ribs? Are the shoulders too narrow or are they creeping down your arms? Do you need a little more or a bit less room up front? All of these things can be changed in the pattern so that when you finish your garment it will fit you the way you want it to. This course will be helpful whether or not you have a specific pattern in mind. You will need to bring needles and a ball of yarn (for the pattern you want to alter, if applicable, and the pattern), a basic calculator. Must have already knit a garment of the general type you want to alter.

Designing Your Own Sweater Pattern-Advanced
Saturday January 30, February 6 & 13, 12-3 p.m.
Do you know what you want to knit, but can’t find exactly the right pattern? Learn to design your own sweater that will suit your body type and fit you perfectly.
In the first class we will discuss body types and explore which garment styles are best suited to each type. We will then discuss the garment that you want to knit, and select the various stitch elements (lace, cables, ribbing, etc.) for it. If you don’t already have your materials, you will be given any assistance you need to make your selection. Your assignment before the second class will be to knit swatches of the pattern stitches you have chosen for your garment. In the second class, we will use your swatches to prepare your pattern. Your assignment before the third class will be to begin your garment.
In the third class, we will assess your progress, address any problems you may be having and make any changes you want to your design.
Materials: For the first class, if you have the yarn and/or needles you want to use for your garment, bring them along. Also, please bring any books or photos showing features you would like to incorporate. If you have a garment you would like to replicate, or one that fits you in the way you would like design to fit you, please bring that too. For the second and third classes, bring your work in progress, a tape measure and a calculator.
Fee: $75

This is a great opportunity to get together with other knitters and see what everyone else is working on. Come in and curl up on our sofas, there’s always hot coffee on!!

Beginner Knit Level I (3 dates available)
Monday Oct. 6, 6-9p.m. or

Learn the absolute basics of knitting. You will learn to cast on and off, the knit stitch, and simple increases and decreases. Our project is a dishcloth.

Beginner Knit Level II (2 dates available)
Tuesday Oct. 20, 6-9p.m. or
Tuesday Nov.3, 6-9p.m.
Now’s the time to learn to purl! For those who took our level I class, or maybe you know how to knit a scarf but are ready to move on. In this class you will knit a baby hat, you will learn the purl stitch and how to finish your project professionally.
Fee: $30 plus materials

Socks
Wednesday Oct. 7, 14, and 21, 6-8p.m.
Get in on the sock knitting craze and learn to knit funky socks using self patterning sock yarn. These socks are knit on 5 needles from the top down.
Fee: $45 plus materials

Toe-Up Socks
Saturday Oct. 24, 31 and Nov.14, 12-3p.m.
Learn how to knit 2 socks at once from the toe up and using circular needles. There is a two week break between the second and third class to ensure you have enough time to knit.
Fee: $50 plus materials

Thrum Mittens
Oct 13, 6-9p.m.
Learn to knit warm, comfy mittens on 4 needles. These mitts have tufts of unspun wool inside for added warmth. Perfect for Christmas gifts!
Fee: $30 plus materials

Top Down Baby Sweater
Oct.19, 26 and Nov. 2, 6-8p.m.
Knit a baby sweater from the neck down, using circular needles and double points. The best part about this technique of sweater knitting is that when you’re done, you’re done!! No sewing up required!!
Fee: $45 plus materials

Cables
Nov. 18, 6-9p.m.
Learn the simplicity of knitting cables in this beautiful scarf project. You will learn several different cables as well as I-cord edging which will prevent your scarf from rolling in at the edges.
Fee: $25 plus materials

Multidirectional Scarf
Oct. 27, 6-9p.m.
This is the perfect project for any yarn. Learn the technique of short row shaping to create this attractive scarf.
Fee: $20 plus materials

Fairisle Fingerless Gloves
Nov. 21 &28, 12-3p.m.
This is a great opportunity to try color work in a fun and functional project.
Fee: $40 plus materials

Lace
Nov 10 & 24, 6-9p.m.
Learn to knit a delicate lace scarf. You will learn to cast on using a crochet hook and knitting needle and you will learn the basics of lace. There are 2 weeks in between classes to give you the time to get your scarf to where it needs to be for the second class.
Fee: $40 plus materials

Finishing
Nov. 7, 12-3p.m.
Do you dread sewing up your projects? This class is aimed to cure that!! You will learn to sew up your knitting professionally using mattress stitch. You will also learn different techniques for shoulder seams (three needle bind off and grafting) and how to sew in sleeves.
Fee: $25

So you've finished your project but now you have to put it together, is this something that you dread? This is one workshop you won't want to miss! Learn everything you need to finish your projects neatly and professionally. In this 2 hour course we will cover mattress stitch for side seams, 2 different shoulder seaming techniques including a 3-needle bind off, picking up stitches around necklines, and grafting.

Hi Everybody!

Clues for the WWKIP Day-related NB Photo Scavenger Hunt are now up! Start collecting photos now and you could win prizes on June 14!

The rest of the “official” schedule is coming soon but here are the highlights:

10-12:00 - Drop by and knit on our community scarf / guestbook. We’ll be out on the sidewalk, scaring the muggles!

10:15 - Meet at Kings Place for knitting on the bus! Route TBA (suggestions welcome) and knitters are welcome to hop on anywhere along the route, too!

12:00 - Lunchtime meet up on the lawn in front of the Courthouse (Queen Street). Bring lawnchairs, water, sunscreen and your lunch. There are lots of “to go” options in the area including Subway, Pita Pit, McDonald’s, Dimitri’s…Expect surprises at this event!!!

2:00 - Ravelry meet-up at Singer

2:30 - 3:00 - Prize draws!

There will be sales on all day including special discounts for anyone who brings a new, non-perishable item for donation to the food bank. Cans of coffee are always a good idea! (More sale details to come)

WWKIP PHOTO SCAVENGER HUNT

Inspired by the Yarn Harlot, we are having a PHOTO SCAVENGER HUNT as part of New Brunswick's celebration of Worldwide Knit in Public Day!

Between now and June 14, take photos of any work in progress with / at the clues listed below (please use the same WIP for all photos).

Bring the photos on your camera (or printed) with you on June 14 and earn points for each clue you find. All clues are worth one point except where indicated.

Optional (but fun!): Post your photos on flickr and tag them with "NBKIP2008" so we can find them easily. Even better, tag them with NBKIP2008 and send them to our Yarns on York group!

Prizes will be awarded at Singer on Saturday, June 14 at 3:00 p.m. Bring your photos in early that day, along with your summary of your success (how many photos, how many points) so we can award without delay.

The UNB College of Extended Learning's Spring 2008 line-up includes Knitting for Beginners with instruction by our very own Trish Campbell!

Trish will introduce a small group of students to the fundamentals of knitting, including basic stitches and how to read a pattern. Students will discover the joy of knitting through a number of quick and rewarding projects.
